Are You a Good Girlfriend?

And here is where I make confession #1012 here on the ‘ole blog:  I’m a terrible friend.

I’m a loner by nature and even though I love being with people, I recharge by retreating to a lonesome place.  I’ve always reasoned this stems from having four children so close together that consumed my every waking moment for years upon end that when they finally started school I was way behind on solitude.  Until the past year I was perfectly fine if I didn’t speak to one person all day until everyone came home from school and work.  I realized it had caught up with me not too long ago when I was at home studying (another thing that often demands confinement)  and a thought hit me with force…”I am lonely.”

I really haven’t done much about it because the bulk of what ever free time I have is typically when every girl I know is busy with a punch-the-clock job or her own life and it’s hard for me to catch up with my family and friends in Georgia because by the time I can get there it’s time to turn right around and come get the kids from school.  But, if I have any resolutions for 2012 it is to find ways of being more intentional in my friendships.  Thankfully, I don’t have to search far because I have a tool – a new book – written by my dear friend Mary Snyder that speaks to just this issue.

I just got mine in the mail this week and started reading today.  Mary and I have so much in common so I found myself connecting with her own initial girlfriend issues from page 1.  Mary has gone a step further and turned a personal search into real, relevant ministry and I’m so incredibly happy to watch God use her in a way so perfectly suited to her.   I’m even more excited that she is going to teach the bible study sessions for my home church retreat in March!

Now is where I get to bless you with a giveaway of a copy of her book.  Her publisher sent me two but – even though I love y’all – I’m being very stingy with mine.  To enter simply leave a comment on this post about one thing that has worked for you in terms of connecting with other women.  I know young moms especially will want some advice.  That season of life was so incredibly hard for me to get bathed every day much less make it to play dates or story time at the library.

I will leave the comments open until Thursday at which point I will randomly select a winner.

In the meantime, visit Mary’s blog to learn more about her life, book,  and ministry.  I’ve also just learned she is giving away two copies of her book and a movie gift certificate so enter here, enter there and chances are great you will walk away with GG&G and maybe a movie for grins.  Sounds like a good GNO to me!

Various and Sundry

hope y’all are having an excellent week.  I’m preparing to head to Thompson Station, TN for a weekend retreat with the women of West Hartselle Baptist.  I absolutely can not wait to meet God in the glory of the changing leaves and to hug my Siesta Friend, Dianne Walters!  There are a few things I need to purge so here it goes, it no particular order…

1.  We have a winner for the first Casting Crowns cd giveaway….

Stephanie at Confessions of a Not So Perfect Pastor’s Wife

Congratulations, Stephanie! Please email your mailing address to lisa AT apreacherwife DOT com so I can have the cd shipped to you.

For those of you who haven’t read Stephanie’s blog, she has a great post right now about raising hands in worship.  Y’all check her out!

MW’s don’t forget I’m giving away another copy for those who submit blogs and fall photos to be featured on M2M for November 4th.

2.  I’m feeling guilty because I excluded lay people from the Casting Crown cd. So I have another one for CIVILIANS i.e., those who are NOT married to the ministry only.  To enter, simply leave a comment on this post .  That’s all.  And PW’s, I will make your giveaway easier next time.  I’m sorry I’m so complicated.  You should be Luke.

3.  I went to Marshall’s this week because I’ve been on a hunt for some ankle boots with a wedge heel.  I told y’all about the pair I found in Florida for $499 that I’ve grieved until now.  I say grieved but the more time has passed, the more angry I’ve gotten over them.   It is an insult to our intelligence to charge $500 for shoes that most likely cost $15 to manufacture.  So imagine my delight when I found some practically just like them for THIRTY-NINE NINETY- NINE.  There was also a sign in the store that said, “The poncho sweater is where its at.”  Under the sign hung various poncho sweaters.  So I bought one and wore it today.  I don’t feel any different.

4.  Sydney is making great progress with the colonial home.  We still do not have a chamber pot.  This is a good thing.

5.  Something I never told y’all that Sydney and I laughed over for the hundredth time a while ago.  When she and I were in Gatlinburg a few weekends ago, we stopped in Bath and Body Works.  There was a little girl of about 10 wreaking havoc all over the store while her mother paid her no attention whatsoever.  She came and stood by us as Syd was smelling a candle.  Syd said, “Mmmmm, this smells like apple!”  The little girl, not having any idea I was looking at her said, “That’s because it says apple on the label, you idiot.”  I looked down at her, jaw dropped in disbelief with what I know must have been a “No you didn’t just say that” look on my face.  She glanced up about that time, realized I heard her and immediately transformed from demon child to Shirley Temple with the hugest, fakest smile you’ve ever seen.  And then she promptly ran away to her mother. It was truly a $10,000 video moment.  Instead of whipping her behind for calling my daughter an idiot I wanted to hug her for making us laugh harder than we had the entire weekend.

6.  Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for this week’s Called Out article.   For those of you who are submitting your writing, THANK YOU!  I love hearing your experiences and perspectives.  Also, Rachel has done such a great job working these submissions and getting them edited and posted.  You girls are the best.

Hugs all around!

Sweetening the Pot – A Casting Crowns Giveaway

Chrissy, the Queen of the M2M Blogroll, came up with a great idea to celebrate Fall amongst the ministry wives.  She gives the details here.  She has done such a great job encouraging community between us and I thought I would sweeten the pot for those of you who will play along!

My favorite band, Casting Crowns, has just released their new cd, “Come to the Well“.  It is amazing.  AMAZING.  Of course all of their records are but I’ve literally sobbed like a baby listening to this new one for the last two days.  One of the things I particularly appreciate about Crowns is the fact they are ministers themselves so they understand the life and get to me way down in the deepest cockles of my heart.  I also admire their gift in calling out the church without dishonoring her.  And I may have mentioned a time or seven, but I’ve asked Jesus to let me be able to sing like Megan Garrett when I get to heaven.  Lord knows it ain’t happening on this side of glory.  (I do, however, sing a mean bass line on ‘Where the Soul of Man Never Dies’.)

With that said, here’s the deal.  I am giving away TWO COPIES of this cd to ministry wives who participate on this post and in the Fall Photo Fun! ( This is not a paid endorsement and Casting Crowns do not know I exist.  I just like giving you things that I would like to win myself.)  If you don’t have any photos, don’t go away.  There are a couple of different ways to enter. Here’s how it is going to work:

FIRST way to enter:   Submit your name, your fall photo(s), blog name and blog url to m2mblogroll AT apreacherswife DOT com.

SECOND way to enter:  Visit at least five blogs on the M2M blogroll and leave a comment ON THIS POST ONLY telling us which ones you visited. Not sure where to start?  How about the featured ones here?

THIRD way to enter:  Sign up to receive email updates on the right-hand sidebar (trying to build up the mailing list since my feed was broken) and leave a separate comment ON THIS POST ONLY letting me know you have enrolled.

I will randomly select ONE winner from THIS POST ONLY Thursday, October 27 and announce on that day.  I will then select ONE winner from those who send in photos for the November 3rd Fall Photo feature and a winner will be randomly selected and announced on that day.

** Important Notes:  This particular giveaway is reserved for ministry wives whose blogs currently appear on the M2M Blogroll and wish to be spotlighted in the November 3rd edition of M2M Featured Blogs.  If your blog is not currently listed, no problem!  Simply request to be added – we would love to have you join!  If you are not a ministry wife, don’t feel left out.  I will be doing something special for you very soon. :)

** If you are ministry wife without a blog, you may still enter using options 2 or 3 above.

Clear as mud?  Okay!  Proof nothing has changed around here!

Let me leave you with two of my favorite church/ministry songs from the cd.  Have a great week!

This is called Spirit Wind. Senior/Preaching Pastor Wives, get ready to bawl.

City On A Hill. A beautiful challenge for The Church.
