West Side of the Wilderness Key Scriptures:
Exodus 3:1-9
Acts 7:30-35

Welcome back! This lesson has been burning in my bones and if I don’t let it out soon, I may spontaneously combust! God’s presence is often manifested in fire in Scriptures. We are about to study the most famous blaze in history. I hope it fans the spark in you as it has me.

Remove your darlin’ little sandals, Girls. The place we are going is holy ground.

“Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro his father-in-law,the priest of Midian; and he led the flock to the west side fo the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.” Exodus 3:1-2

In this passage of scripture, forty years have passed for Moses in a life that looked nothing like he’d planned. However, we have learned from our previous lessons that he is decidedly content being married to Jethro’s daughter, tending to Jethro’s sheep and living in Jethro’s land. On this particular day a fire blazed forth in the desert in the sight of a man who needed it more than he had ever known. Moses was convinced that he ‘was’. Little did he know, he was about to meet I AM.

Girls, our God is one of present-tense. There is no situation where you have ever been, are in now, or are going any time in your future where He will not prove Himself to be a current solution. I believe sometimes we have the mindset that because our issues are rooted in our yesterdays, our past failures, our shameful histories, that God is unable to work a miracle in it today. Don’t let the enemy feed you that lie! God’s eyes are ever on you, even in the west side of the wilderness and for everything you are not – He IS. He can and will redeem a life not lived for Him and use it for His present glory but just like Moses, sometimes that calls for a cleansing.

Let’s look at a bit more scripture to explore this thought:

“When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am’. Then He said, ‘Do not come near here, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.’” Exodus 3:4-5

I am fascinated by the word ‘call’ that is used in this verse. It is not merely a shout or command, but when used with a name, is an establishment of authority over the one being called. The same concept is found with Adam in the Garden with his naming of the animals thereby establishing authority over them. God was in a sense beginning His commissioning of Moses by reminding him who was in charge. We’ll see in next week’s lesson how Moses tried to argue that point, but make no mistake, God allows dialogue but never disagreement where His will is concerned.

After God called to Moses, we find that he responded much like Abraham when he was asked to sacrifice Isaac. Whether in prosperity or pain, when God called the response was, “Here I am.” I pray that when my God comes looking for me that He doesn’t have to search for me in the bushes as He did Adam and Eve in the Garden. God did not call out because He didn’t know where they were. He wanted them to realize how far they had run from Him. It is a wise woman who constantly asks the question, “Where am I?” in her walk with the Father.

Moses is told not to come near because he is ‘standing on holy ground’. The terminology used in this phrase tells us the ground was consecrated and was in essence a place of cleansing. Though God used all those 40 years in Midian as preparation for Moses, he was living in past tense as an alien and stranger in a land not his own. God was extending an invitation to start over, be clean, and to be used of Him to work His wonders and spread His fame. It was time for Moses to lay aside the prince and the shepherd as well as any other pre-conceived idea of how he would bring about Israel’s rescue and become the God-defined deliverer he was born to be.

Girls, I have no way of knowing where you are in life. I simply know where I have been in mine. I have experienced difficult times in the past that I can look back on now as preparation periods for my ‘now’ ministry. When I have endured long times of waiting, it has always been followed by a time of an intense encounter with the Lord where He lit a fire to have me recognize to some extent the reason I had to go through that trial. That fire was not only for illumination but also for rejuvenation and restoration depending on what my state of mind was at the time. I know our lives would be so much easier if God would just show up in our azaleas and tell us audibly what He would have us do. But you know, He did that for the Israelites and they doubted Him nonetheless. I’ll take His written Word and Holy Spirit anyday. I can forget what a voice tells me. The power of it fades when hard times come however, I can never forget what a black and white word tells me day after day. What the Bible tells me is God loves mankind and He has chosen to reveal Himself to them through me and you. What will we do with that commissioning? God’s deliverance will come! I pray we will be a willing instrument through which He brings it. Let it be, Lord. And let it be me.

Let’s apply what we’ve studied with a few Discussion Questions.

1. How current is your God? Is he up to date on all your issues or do you have old hurts you still hold behind your back?

2. Has the enemy ever told you there are situations that are ‘old news’ that are better left stuffed down? Or perhaps because they were so long ago they can’t possibly be affecting you now?

3. In the matter of established authority, does God truly reign in your life? Where are you when He calls your name?

4. Do you ever feel God has forgotten you in your ‘west side of the wilderness’?

5. Have you ever experienced a time of cleansing where God has illuminated and rejuvenated you? If not, do you find you are in need of this now?

Please know I pray for each of you as we continue this study together. I appreciate your emails with your very personal responses to what God is doing in your life. When His Word falls on the fertile soil of our hearts, He promises it will bear fruit. Blessings on you!!!

Acts 7

“And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.”

Exodus 2: 21-22

Welcome back!

By this point, you have a whole new perspective on biblical beauty from the first four lessons. I pray what you have learned of God’s idea of loveliness is something you will hold on to day after day when the enemy attempts to use the mirror to tear you down. Can we resolve ahead of time to instead turn that mirror back on him? In doing this, you will remind him of a divine paradox. He used to be the most lovely of God’s creation but Sin made him repulsive. We were once repulsive in our Sin however, by faith in Jesus Christ, God has made us beautiful. Satan is the ugly one, dear! Do not let him assign his fate to you!

We have come to the place in our study of Moses where we find him fleeing the wrath of Pharaoh because of his killing the Egyptian on behalf of a Hebrew. We are told in the New Testament book of Hebrews that he fled Egypt ‘in faith’. Can I suggest to you that sometimes we can be ‘in faith’ yet be totally bewildered, downcast, confused, and downright demoralized when things do not turn out like we planned? Are there any hands to raise? Moses flight led him to Midian which was located across the Sinai peninsula. (Midian is modern-day Saudi Arabia) The inhabitants there were descendants of Abraham and his wife Keturah, yet they were not devoted worshippers of the One True God.

Can you fathom Moses’ run across the desert? Envision his stumbling into the area of the Midian well distorted from the heat rising from the scorching sand. There is no doubt he caused quite a stir among the shepherds as he defended the Midianite women in his sweaty, Egyptian finery. The noble gesture earned him a place at the dinner table of Jethro, the priest of Midian, and Jethro’s daughter Zipporah as a wife to boot.

Do not be confused into thinking that Moses limped out of the desert and straight into happily ever after. Let’s break down our key verse and learn a bit more about Moses state of mind when he agreed to become a part of Jethro’s family.

“And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.” Exodus 2:21 (KJV)

The word ‘content’ in this context is very interesting. It is the Hebrew word “ya’al” (Strong’s 2974) and means “to be willing, to show willingness, to be determined, to undertake to do, to make a beginning. It is making up one’s mind to commence a given activity. Today we use terms such as ‘initiative’, or ‘motivation’. The word has the nuance of determination and resolve.” Now, in comparison to this meaning of ‘content’, consider another definition NOT used here. It is simply, “to breathe after”.

Can you feel the difference? Moses’ contentedness was a determined decision to be happy in this new situation. He was a man with no family, no home. This opportunity was all he had going for him so he resolved to pull himself up by his fancy sandal straps and make a new life for himself. The other ‘content’ in my mind is much more dreamy and romantic. It is the steady rhythm of one who is not holding her breath in anxiety. It is the happiness of a mother watching her husband and children play together. It is the young couple without a penny to their name but rich in love. It is the college student who embraces God’s future for her life. It is the deep exhale of bliss.

And so Moses’ new life began. He became a shepherd, a detestable vocation to any Egyptian, much less one raised as an Egyptian prince. Hebrews tells us that Moses chose to be mistreated with his own people instead of enjoying his life of luxury, but something tells me he did not envision how far the mighty would fall. The next verse in our Key does not seem earth-shattering at first glance, but I am fascinated by the implications of the wording in it. Let’s take a deeper look.

“And she bare him a son, and called his name Gershom; for he said, ‘I have been a stranger in a strange land.”

In considering this verse, we will be setting the stage for perhaps the greatest encounter in the Old Testament between God and man – Moses and the Burning Bush. You have no idea how anxious I am to present it to you and how inadequate I feel to do it. If God has taught me nothing else through this study, it is that He is ENOUGH. I trust Him to complete His work and even if I say it wrong, He will have you read it right. I’m praying for a visual Pentecost!

Look with me at the definition for the name ‘Gershom’. Remember how significant the naming of a child was to the ancients. You can literally look at a child’s name and know the heart of the parent. Moses had become an alien in a strange land. Here was the birth of the concept of being far from our heavenly home, of living somewhere we do not belong. Moses was a City Boy who had found himself in the backside of the desert. What a terrifying, lonely feeling.

What I want to focus on right now is not so much Gershom’s name but with the verb Moses used before it, ‘have been’. There is yet some time to pass before Moses will meet God in the Bush, but you already know the name by which God will introduce Himself to Moses – I AM. I get the shivers just typing it! Here is the really fascinating part. The Hebrew verb translated ‘I AM’ (hay ah – Strong’s 1961) is the exact same verb translated in Moses’ naming of his son as ‘I have been’. When God says, “I AM ever-existent, I AM ever-present, I AM ever capable”, Moses will reply, “I Was. I was in the position to save the Egyptians. I was going to be their deliverer. I was going to do mighty things for You, God. I really was.”

Have you ever found yourself floundering in a desert? Unsure of your next step? Feeling like a ‘has been’? There have been seasons in my life when my situation was so barren that I could do nothing but look back on brighter days and think, “then I could have done something great for God. Then my faith was deeper, my relationship with God stronger, my circumstances more blessed.” I used to be so heartbroken over what I believed were wasted years of ineffectiveness when now I understand God used some very painful circumstances to demonstrate His power to heal. They were not wasted days at all. They were days of faith, days of preparation, days of strength. His strength, not mine. He wanted me to know Him so when it was time to spread His fame, I would have an intimate knowledge of the Person of whom I spoke. It is hard to convince someone of God’s goodness when you have never actually tasted it. It would be like trying to describe the view from the top of Everest when you have never climbed it. He and I have climbed together and the summit is amazing, Dear Sister! He’ll take you too, if you let Him.

Let’s discuss what we’ve learned today.

Discussion Questions:

1. Have you ever found yourself ‘in faith’ yet bewildered or demoralized?

2. Do you consider yourself content? Would you describe it as Decidedly Content or Dreamily Content?

3. If you are not content, are there circumstances that keep you from this feeling?

4. Have you ever found yourself in a place where you looked back on a period of your Christian walk and believed a great opportunity passed you by?

5. Do you ever believe your faith was stronger in an earlier time in your Christianity and find yourself floundering now?

6. How can this season be one of great preparation instead of a period of “I Was”?

In our study together next week we will continue with this line of thinking as we meet Jehovah God. I can not wait to show you how God can make the great exchange of our “I Was” for his ‘I AM’

It is with a bittersweet spirit that I write this Lesson – our final in the ‘I AM: So You Don’t Have to Be’ blog study. I hope you’ll be patient as I share a bit about what this process has meant to me.

I remember clearly coming home last March from our church women’s ministry retreat where I first presented this material and feeling God wasn’t finished with the message yet – not so much because He told me you needed to hear it, but because it required more time in my own heart to be a Word that would abide rather than be stored away on a shelf as a quaint memory of a great weekend with God and my girlfriends. He impressed upon me to spend more time in the Exodus account by writing the lessons out for this blog.

I had no idea how the idea of a blog study would be received by you, but I continued as a matter of obedience. When I shared my heart with my dear friend Iris, she was so incredibly supportive and even put legs to her encouragement by volunteering to make a study button. Thank you, Iris. You’ll never know what fire you’ve stoked in me!

One thing you can always know about anything I presume to teach is that God has already made my refining crucible melting hot before He ever lights a fire under yours. This study has been intensely personal. 1 Peter 5:10 is a favorite verse of mine. It says, “After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.” This establishment Peter is referring to comes from a couple of Greek words that mean, “to set fast, to turn resolutely in a certain direction, or to confirm” and also, “to lay a basis for, erect, something put down as a substruction of a building”.

Girls, there are pillars our God is setting under our faith so that it will be one that does not shrink back nor is shaken. The idea that God is ENOUGH, that He is sufficient in every way so I don’t have to be is absolutely foundational for me in a way I didn’t comprehend before He led me down a very difficult road. Before this past year, I subconsciously believed I set my own pillars, that I had to be strong and in control so the house wouldn’t come tumbling down. So when the house did crumble in a most unexpected way I was left amidst the rubble holding on the only thing which still stood – the pillar of salvation. What is a girl to do when the walls fall in? The worst thing is to try to rebuild that thing on the same sand as before. We have to look to the Higher Rock and allow Him to be the substruction for every single thought, decision, action, word, and deed. It is only when our feet are set on this firm place that He can confirm the direction He has for our lives. This is the message of abundant living – being set on a right course in which we’ve traded all our dreams for God’s.

I am also very sentimental over today’s Lesson material as we will be focusing on Moses as he overlooked the Promised Land atop Mount Nebo. I think each of us have one person in Scripture with whom we feel a deep kinship. I can’t tell you the number of times I have been the girl at the bush stammering, “But, God! I can’t, God. I’m not good enough, God. Pick someone else, God.” This one thing I know through studying the relationship between God and His servant, Moses: It is SO not about me. Who am I to say my God is not enough to accomplish anything He wills through me? Satan will seek to turn our acceptance of a task into an issue of pride. If we say ‘yes’, will others think I think I’m good enough? And in all our looking at one another we have taken our eyes off the One whose glory will not be shared.

By the end of his long life, Moses had his eye on one person – the I AM, Yahweh, his Jehovah. Above all the names Moses could use to speak to God, perhaps the most precious to him was Friend. How else could he climb Mt. Nebo that final day of his life, knowing he would never return? I’ve read this last Chapter of Deuteronomy so many times always wondering what that scene must have been like. So, imagine my delight when I found the account of the day according to Jewish Tradition as recorded by Jocephus, a Jewish historian. Now remember, this is Jewish Tradition, not Scripture but captivating nonetheless. Just don’t get hung up on any extra-Biblical details.

With that said, get yourself a hanky and read Jocephus, Antiquities of the Jews 8:48-49 (*Note – scroll down to Chapter 8, verse 48-49. There was no link for these specific verses. I didn’t build them into the post for sake of space.)

Saying Goodbye

Being in ministry, Luke and I have had to say goodbye way more times than I like to count. The first time was when we left for college from the church we were both saved in the year before. Most of the years prior to my salvation, I hadn’t cried many tears. I was cold, strong, and self-controlled. The major work God did in my life in that first year after I was born again was simply to turn my black heart into a feeling, beating thing again. During our last Sunday at church, I cried every tear that had been penned up for the last ten. I didn’t think I would ever be the same again having to leave those people I had learned to love so much behind. BUT – a wonderful thing I’ve learned is this: Goodbyes are always followed by hellos.

I can only imagine the things in your own dear lives you’ve had to say goodbye to: loved ones, church fellowships, jobs, homes, dreams and expectations or perhaps many combinations of these. Based on what I know about God, I can safely say if He has allowed a goodbye in your life, He has replaced it with a hello you never asked for or imagined. What we are seeking in this last section of study is God as our Portion and the satisfaction for our souls.

There is no more beautiful picture of this concept than that of God and Moses alone on that mountain. Moses who had been a Prince of Egypt, a judge and prophet to millions and here he stood overlooking the Possession he’d sought for 40 years knowing he couldn’t enter. A lesser man would have been bitter and disappointed but Moses had come to know God Himself as his inheritance and salvation.

Though he would never step foot into what he believed to be God’s promise to him as well as the children of Israel, his joy was found in knowing his Canaan was about to be ultimately fulfilled. Just like Hebrews 11 tells us, we may not ever see the thing we believe God has promised us on this earth but our hope is in the ultimate rest of our Savior Jesus Christ. I believe I can also scripturally show you Moses looked forward to the rest of Jesus Christ as well. You are going to love this.

I want you to remember with me Moses’ Song in Exodus 15, particularly verse 2 which reads, “The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him, My father’s God, and I will extol Him.”

Let’s look at the word ‘salvation’. The Hebrew for this word is ‘Yeshuwah’. For those of you who may not recognize this word, it is the Hebrew for Jesus! I have chill bumps each time I read its meaning, “something saved, i.e. a deliverance“. Okay, hold on because it gets better. The root word of ‘Yeshuwah’ is ‘Yasha’ and means “to be open, wide, or free. i.e. to be safe, to bring salvation, get victory.” The opposite of this word is ‘to be bound’. So what was Moses saying in his prophetic song? God has become my Jesus. He is my deliverance, my safety, my wide open spaces, my unbinding, my Promised Land.

It only makes sense that Moses would have been saddened by being told he could not enter Canaan, however, he didn’t need the ‘here’ because he looked ahead to his reward and persevered because he saw Him who is invisible. (Hebrews 11:27-28) Girls, sometimes God says ‘no’. It may be because of our own sin or more often simply because God is keeping us safe from circumstances we can’t possibly know. I love The Message version of 1 Peter 5:7, “Live carefree before God; He is most careful with you.” He is careful with you. Oh I could just collapse in a heap in my Father’s arms knowing I am safe in His heart. He is careful with me because I am precious to Him. He doesn’t want anything to come my way that He hasn’t carefully planned. If I do have to experience the fire, He wants to go in first instead of having me run off on my own. Our Father is very careful. Very watchful. Very much in love.

The View From the Top

I live close to Chattanooga, Tennessee and one of our famous tourist attractions is Rock City. The site is perched on the side of Lookout Mountain and, if you believe all the marketing hype, you can look off and “See Seven States!” Along the landing, there are several stands with the metal binoculars that allow you to see for miles.

I always think of Rock City when I read how God called Moses to the top of Nebo and began showing him the Promised Land broken down into each tribes’ inheritance. As I prayed over this scene while I was walking just this week, the song ‘Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus’ came on my iPod (The Third Day version of course). I cried like a baby as I pictured Moses on that mountain looking over the Promise. In my own imagination, I believe Moses’ death came just as in the song, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face. And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His Glory and Grace.” As the earthly Canaan dimmed, the unfading one appeared. Oh, that we could all go out in such a whisper.

It’s Time

There is so much more that could have been said and so many better ways to have said it but I pray from the depths of my heart that God impressed at least one truth from this study that will indwell your spirit, abide richly, and change the way you move through this earth. I hope you know you are beautiful in God’s eyes. That you are enough because He is enough. That you have enough because He is your satisfaction. He is all that and more – so you don’t have to be.

Instead of our list of Burning Questions, I would like to leave you today with just one:

What is one thing God has taught you through this study?

Blessings on you!

‘Full Circle’

Key Text:

Numbers 14

Ahhh..Finally!! Week Fifteen! You have been a patient bunch of girls. Life has been crazy busy around my house. I am so glad to be getting back to this study. Let’s get straight to it!

In Lesson 14, we alluded to the fact that sometimes we can feel we aren’t truly living in our place of Promise (or abundant, effectual living) simply because we are still fighting. We were able to spiritually map ourselves depending upon whether our struggles were centered on lack of faith/belief in God or the attacks of the Enemy. At this point in the study, we are so close to the Promise we can almost taste the milk and honey that flow there. Don’t stop now! If you are like me, the middle can be a much more comfortable place to be instead of within inches of the finish. I can use this study as an example. Only two lessons to go and I find myself stalling – not for lack of zeal but because in some weird way, I dread the let down when it is over. I don’t know how NOT to fight. For me, the days without struggle are the ones that breed laziness and apathy. It’s like being 5 lbs away from the goal on the scale or within a few payments of being out of debt. The last days are the most weary and we wonder if we’ll have strength to maintain the prize. Am I talking to anyone out there?

This week, we are going to revisit Numbers 32. This is the portion of Scripture where Moses is still alive but has already been told by God he would die before crossing the Jordan into the Promised Land. As Moses’ last act of war, God has just executed vengeance upon Midian for their part in seducing Israel to idolatry. The spoils were divided amongst the tribes and the request arose from the sons of Reuben, Gad, and the 1/2 tribe of Manasseh to be given the land east of the Jordan as their inheritance since it was a suitable place for livestock.

There are many events in the Exodus account that stir my heart – many of them regretfully skipped for sake of topic and time, but this particular scene is HUGE to me. Here we find ourselves in a familiar place, one the Israelites had been before. Once again as forty years prior, the nation is standing at the edge of the Promise and here are a small number who want to remain behind. The set up is reminiscent of Numbers 14 when the nation wailed over the reports brought back from the spies about the land and its inhabitants. Only Caleb and Joshua trusted God to go before them into the Land while the other ten spies discouraged the people by spreading doubt and fear. The ensuing rebellion cost Israel forty long years and the death of the entire generation – all because ten men did not trust their God to finish the work He had begun by leading them out of Egypt.

Was this about to be a replay of what had happened forty years earlier? Had Israel learned anything in their wanderings? Which leads us to ask ourselves the very same question: What wisdom are we gaining in our afflictions? How are we reacting differently when we are presented with circumstances which yesterday would have found us in rebellion against God? There comes a time, Girls, that something has got to give. We can live in this borderland the rest of our days but this is NOT the life Your God intended for you to live! How long do we have to flounder without yet learning to draw from the well of experience we have with our God in order to let His deliverances CHANGE the way we move through this life? AFFECT our decision making? MOVE us from bondage to abundance? When are we going to stop making the same ridiculous mistakes over and over and over? God can and will clear the way for you into abundance, but He can not take the steps for you. Just like the Israelites, the Promise is there waiting for the generation and more specifically, the woman who will be brave enough to possess it.

Moses had learned a thing or two about His God. He’d been found a pauper at the foot of Horeb and had returned with a multitude at his side to worship. He’d been one afraid to even speak and yet found himself singing praises to the God of Israel in front of millions. He had been one who believed his sufficiency rested in his position in Egypt but had been taught God’s I AM is very much magnified when we are not. Not beautiful. Not famous. Not enough.

As Moses stood before these tribes believing they were about to make the same mistake – again – we can only imagine the grief he felt in believing they still did not get it. No wonder he flipped his lid! “Now behold, you have risen up in your father’s place, a brood of sinful men, to add still more to the burning anger of the Lord against Israel. For if you turn away from following Him, He will once more abandon them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all these people.” (Numbers 32:14-15)

And what a relief when the tribes instead told Moses “you’ve got us all wrong! We just want to settle our families and livestock. We are going to fight alongside our brothers and will not return home until every Israelite has received their inheritance.” (vs. 17-18, my paraphrase) And yet, what should have come as an assurance was still met with some doubt. Moses knew this people and their propensity to go back on their words the moment the going got tough so he charged them in an oath saying, “you are free from obligation after all your brothers are settled in the Land. But if you do not do this, you have sinned against the Lord – be sure your sin will find you out.” (vs. 22-23) I read one commentary which stated this phraseology literally means, “your sin will hunt you down.”

We learn later these tribes held to their word and returned to their homes in peace and victory. Hear me on this one – they learned from the mistakes of their fathers and determined to act differently because of them. They had witnessed the destruction their unbelief had caused and chose to trust God instead of longing for the control of Egypt. That is what our lives are all about! Absorbing experiences, processing them through the balm of Scripture, and allowing them to color – in a healthy way – every decision, word, and deed that pours forth from our bodies. Scripture is clear that men and women are responsible for their own sin, but reality shows children often repeat the poor actions of their parents even when that action brought great pain. Even if you do not have a lineage of faith, can you be brave enough in the power of your God to break the yoke and be the first to stand for His Name? Your answer to this question will affect a multitude. What will you do?

Another thing I want to address before we end today is found in Joshua 22. In this Chapter, Reuben, Gad, and 1/2 Manasseh are settled in their inheritance across the Jordan from the rest of Israel after fulfilling their oath to the brothers. They then built an altar to God as a witness between them and the tribes living across the Jordan that they indeed were a part of Israel even though the River separated them. The Law of Moses strictly prohibited any altars at any location other than the Tabernacle. When the other tribes heard of this altar, they immediately prepared to go to war against Reuben and Gad to destroy them for their disobedience.

Goodness – talk about being a misunderstood group! First Moses, now the entire nation of Israel has questioned the faithfulness and integrity of these three tribes. Certainly their fathers had made many mistakes in the past, but the only thing these men were guilty of was asking for an inheritance on the fringe of the Promise.

This very much speaks to me in a personal way about our propensity as women to hold a mistake over some one’s head for a very long time after our sister has already paid the price for making it. The offense may not even be something that was truly worthy of being offended over, but by the time we blow that thing out of proportion the girl doesn’t stand a chance in the event of any misstep whatsoever. You may be that girl – the one who is constantly misunderstood or never feeling quite forgiven for something that was settled between you and God long ago. Can I encourage you this day? You be found faithful before your God and HE alone will be your justice. And girls, may we never be found guilty of lacking the same grace and mercy that has been poured on us time after time!

The Israelites were ready to go to war over a huge misunderstanding. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and the two sides were able to reconcile to one another. May we follow their example of Joshua 22:33, “The word pleased the sons of Israel, and the sons of Israel blessed God.” No matter the offense, let’s commit to blessing God together for the sake of His Great Name.

We’ve got a few things to talk about so let’s get to Discussion!

Burning Questions:

1. I think we can all agree most of us find ourselves closer to God in the struggle than without it. How does it affect you knowing that trial is what draws you more intimately in relationship to Your God?

2. Have you ever made a huge mistake but then found yourself in the position for a ‘do-over’? Did you make a better decision the second or third or fourth time around? :)

3. Is there a ‘generational sin’ in your family you have overcome? This can be anything from a lineage of unbelief to issues of many kinds. This may be a private matter. Share if you feel liberty or quietly thank God for His deliverance. If you have not yet been delivered, I pray with all my heart God’s Word is giving you courage to ask for help in that area.

4. Have you ever been misunderstood? Do you feel unforgiven for past mistakes even though you know God has forgiven you?

5. Is there a sister you need to extend grace towards in order to be able to ‘bless God together’? Do you comprehend how your unforgiveness is hindering her from inhabiting her own Promise? If no, do you recognize a situation within your church body where this may be happening? If so, ask God to raise up a ‘Phinehas’ (mediator) in this situation. He may just reveal the Phinehas is you. :)

I look so forward to our discussion this week – It’s so great to be back on track! :) Don’t forget to link to your Study Post, not your homepage, if you are placing your answers on your blog. As always, you are more than welcome to leave your thoughts in the Comments!

Welcome back, Girls! I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend and are ready for Lesson Fourteen. We only have this week and two more to go before you have completed this entire study. WOW. I hope alternating weeks with Round Two of the study hasn’t been confusing and is working out with everyone’s schedules. I also want to encourage those of you who lack only a few lessons to persevere until the end. I have a little something I’m preparing for you who complete the study so even if you just leave your remarks in the Lesson comments, be sure you sign the Linky so I will know you’ve completed each one.

We introduced this last chapter by considering four purposes for the Promise based on Leviticus 26. They were: A sense of self-worth, security, provision, and finally and perhaps most importantly, an assurance of love. I particularly adore Psalm 136 because of the repetition of the phrase, “For His lovingkindness is everlasting” when recounting God’s actions on behalf of mankind from Creation to the giving of the Land to the Israelites. Why did He create the earth? Because He loves us originally. Why did He rescue the Israelites and make them into a ‘peculiar’ people? Because He loves us mercifully. Why did He give the Promised Land? Because He loves us eternally. For His lovingkindness is everlasting…..Oh, Amen.

Let’s set up today’s Lesson. In Exodus 6, Moses has gone to Pharaoh to ask for the Israelite’s release. Instead of freedom, Pharaoh increased their labor unmercifully. God stated the covenant He had made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to both rescue them from Egypt and give them Canaan for both a possession and place of unhindered worship. Moses communicated God’s message of deliverance to the Israelites once again but because of their cruel bondage they refused to believe. Their despondency was also felt by Moses who repeated an old argument to God, “Behold, the sons of Israel have not listened to me; how then will Pharaoh listen to me, for I am unskilled in speech?”

Moses’ doubt soon turned to determination when God unleashed all the plagues upon Egypt. Pharaoh, under compulsion (Exodus 6:1), finally let the Israelites leave the country. Oh how it pains me to skip the Passover, the Plunder of the Egyptians, and the Parting of the Red Sea! However, I am pacified (do you LOVE all the P’s?!) by knowing after Israel successfully passed through the waters, Moses sang. For the first time noted in Scripture, Moses opened his mouth – the one unskilled in speech – and belted out a tune to the Highly Exalted, Warrior God. A big change from the Moses at the end of Exodus 6!

The words of Moses’ song in Exodus 15 mark an important shift in his ministry. When the Israelites saw the great power God displayed against Egypt, they not only believed in Jehovah, but in Moses also. Hear me on this one, girls. We hold an amazing amount of power in our words. It is our duty as women of God to build one another up in the Lord lest our sister lose heart in the individual mission God has laid before her. The Israelites’ complaining at the end of Chapter 6 caused Moses to return to an old place of unbelief in regard to his stammering lips. However, the realization of the people that God indeed positioned Moses as a Judge and Deliverer in turn gave Moses the courage to shout praises to the Lord in front of the whole assembly. We don’t dare ever be the reason one of our girlfriends stutters! Instead, try an ‘I believe in you’. You have no idea how brave you’ll make her!

Perhaps the most fascinating part of Moses’ worship is seeing him transcend before our very eyes beyond Egypt and the desert to spiritually inhabit the Promise. Verse 13 says, ‘You have guided them to your holy habitation” before they had barely begun the journey. He continued by prophetically announcing the route of Israel to Canaan and the terror the inhabiting peoples would experience on account of them. He concluded by praising God for His presence in the sanctuary among His people well before the plans for the Tabernacle had ever been given. Because of Moses’ faith in God’s covenant, prior to his inhabiting the Promise, it already inhabited him.

In reading your responses and emails regarding this study, it has become apparent that many of you believe you are not living in your Promise simply because you are still fighting. I want to remind you the Israelites did not enter the Promised Land, pull up a recliner, and watch HGTV the moment they arrived. No, ma’am! They fought for many years to drive out the idolatrous nations that would surely be a snare to them.

Which begs the question: What is the difference in living the abundant life within Spiritual Promise and remaining yet outside it? Based on the experience of Israel, I think we can fairly evaluate our own position by the following:

1. Living Outside the Promise – The purpose of the desert was to humble and test the Israelites to see if they would obey God. God caused the Hebrews to hunger so He could fill them with manna they had not known. Though He was not obligated to such extravagances, God wanted to prove He would provide every single physical and spiritual need. God was building trust between His people and Himself, therefore; the ongoing fight was against unbelief and distrust. (Deuteronomy 8)

APPLICATION: If your struggle is unbelief and lack of faith in God’s action on your behalf, you may yet still be living outside the Promise. That does not mean you are doomed to stay there! Hear the encouragement of God to Joshua,

“Only be strong and courageous, be careful to do according all the Law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord you God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:6-9)

Your entry into the Promise will be directly related to how much time you spend in the Word and allow God’s courage to indwell your Spirit. Trust Him with your battles – He is on your side! If you are uncertain if you have ever truly accepted God’s gift of salvation, would you please email me so we can talk and pray that through?

2. Living Inside the Promise – The unbelief of the Israelites cost forty long years in the desert until a new generation raised up who believed God enough to allow Him to go ahead of them and overtake the inhabiting nations. Joshua and Caleb were the only two scouts in the first generation who believed their Warrior God would bring them victory. When it was time to once again attempt a conquest, the greatest issue was no longer unbelief but the internal effect of Satan’s schemes in the specific area of idolatry. The fight would also continue externally on behalf of the brethren. Many battles would ensue in which a group of Israelite tribes would fight alongside one another in order to clear out their inheritance from the Canaanites.

“Then they came near to him (Moses) and said, ‘We will build here sheepfolds for our livestock and cities for our little ones; but we ourselves will be armed ready to go before the sons of Israel until we have brought them to their place, while our little ones live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. We will not return to our homes until every one of the sons of Israel has possessed his inheritance’.” (Numbers 32:17-18)

APPLICATION: If your struggles lie more within Satan’s schemes to attack your Kingdom effectiveness through either personal idolatries or external issues relating to family, relationships, health, etc., you are most likely in the Promise yet still fighting the thing through! Living in the Promise can also be measured in proportion to your time spent in intimacy with God as well as your sense of living an abundant life. Simply ask yourself: Am I confessed and unashamed? Though I am in a struggle, can I describe the underlying emotion in my life as contentment and joy? Do I consistently seek God’s will in my life through prayer and His Word? Am I spending time fighting alongside my sisters to see them come into their own inheritance? If you can not answer many of these in the affirmative, but your belief and trust has been decided, then consider moving further into enemy territory! He won’ t bother you if you aren’t bothering him!

I pray these two applications have been a tool for you to check your own spiritual map and hopefully encourage you by helping you see you may be farther along than you think! Girls, God delivered us FROM bondage, not to leave us floundering, but to deliver us TO abundance. Because He is fighting on our behalf, we can take righteous risks knowing the outcome will be the exact thing which will glorify His name. If there is any legacy I pray I leave, it is that I was brave, courageous, and trusted My God to glorify Himself HOWEVER He sees fit. That can either be a horrifying or exhilarating thought. Let’s choose adventure!

Okay, I know this has been the Chapter for songs, but to close today’s lesson I have to share another set of lyrics with you that really spoke to me about today’s topic. If you read my blog at all, you know I am smitten with the new Casting Crowns CD, ‘The Altar and the Door’. My favorite song from the first time I heard the tracks until now is ‘Somewhere in the Middle’. See if you relate to this:

Somewhere in the Middle

Somewhere between the hot and the cold
Somewhere between the new and the old
Somewhere between who I am and who I used to be
Somewhere in the middle, You’ll find me

Somewhere between the wrong and the right
Somewhere between the darkness and the light
Somewhere between who I was and who You’re making me
Somewhere in the middle, You’ll find me

Just how close can I get, Lord, to my surrender without losing all control

Fearless warriors in a picket fence,
reckless abandon wrapped in common sense
Deep water faith in the shallow end
and we are caught in the middle
With eyes wide open to the differences,
the God we want and the God who is
But will we trade our dreams for His
or are we caught in the middle
Are we caught in the middle

Somewhere between my heart and my hands
Somewhere between my faith and my plans
Somewhere between the safety of the boat and the crashing waves
Somewhere between a whisper and a roar
Somewhere between the altar and the door
Somewhere between contented peace and always wanting more
Somewhere in the middle You’ll find me

Just how close can I get, Lord, to my surrender
without losing all control

Lord, I feel You in this place and I know You’re by my side
Loving me even on these nights when I’m caught in the middle

Burning Questions:

1. We talked of the importance of encouragement when God has called us to task. Has a lack of encouragement or even ridicule ever taken you back to a place of insufficiency you thought you had conquered?

2. Is there someone you know right now who is attempting a new ministry that could use a world of encouragement from you? Why do you think this thing may be scary for her? Will you commit to write a note, make a call, or send an email with a dose of courage inside?

3. Read Moses’ song in Exodus 15:3-18. What line speaks to you most? Why does it touch you?

4. Based on the applications of living either inside or outside the Promise, where would you now say you currently reside? (As I read your answers, if this one point seems to have been confusing, I’ll elaborate in a separate post. Again remember I am asking this question in terms of abundant living and not in determining salvation.;))

5. If you are ‘Somewhere in the Middle’ between the girl you were and the one you want to be, how do you plan on changing that? Is there a barrier you feel you can’t climb? Knowing God is for you and this study group is for you, is there a way we can help?

Blessings on your week, sisters!

Lesson 13
The Purpose of Promise

Key Passages:

“After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: ‘Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward’.” Genesis 15:1

I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove savage beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase then thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you. I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you. You will still be eating last year’s harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new. I will put my dwelling place among you, and I will not abhor you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.” Leviticus 26:6-13

“And [God] passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin.” Exodus 34:6

“And through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” Genesis 22:18

“The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: ‘All nations will be blessed through you’.” Galatians 3:8

Over Halfway Home

I can hardly believe we are finally moving into our last segment of this study. No doubt there is much more that can be said where Moses is concerned, in fact, we could go on for a year and still not exhaust all the spiritual relevance from this man’s relationship with God. However, the purpose of our study is to reveal God as “I AM” for all we are not. I am so excited to move into the area of our study where we can finally discuss how to live the abundant life by shedding off the shackles of Egypt. I pray as we have studied God’s Beauty, His Sufficiency, and His Fame that you have begun to accept the fact He has an abundant life waiting for you if you will simply step into it. Sometimes He has to take us far enough away from our Egypt so it will be farther to travel back there than to fight it out to Canaan. (Exodus 13:17) Oh how I hope you are more than halfway home!

The Confidence of Canaan

What is it that appeals to us about living physically and spiritually free? As I have prayed about the true implications of living a life unbound and unhindered in any way, it occurred to me there are four desires of (wo)man that are echoed in the promises of God to the Israelites in Leviticus 26. Society may have changed in the past several thousand years, but the basic needs of of an individual have not. I believe we can reduce most life issues down into a need for these things:

1. A sense of self-worth – I love the imagery in Leviticus 26:13 where God expresses his desire for His people to walk with heads held high. To me this embodies the need we all have to be unashamed whether because of sin, social standing, or appearance. The Hebrew phrase literally means ‘heads held upright’. In my own life, I know the times when shame or guilt has made it impossible for me to hold my head upright and look at others, especially God, in the eyes. This doesn’t mean we are to cultivate pride, but rather find our worth in the One who has worked mightily in our behalf and who is faithful to forgive sin.

2. A Feeling of Peace and Safety – When was the last time you were anxious, afraid, or worried? A woman’s mind is constantly racing with thoughts of caring for our families, being a good friend, keeping up with finances, and completing the things on our never-ending ‘to do’ lists. If you are like me, you worry about the safety of your children (if you have them) much more than you do your own. When I think of my own safety I typically don’t fear for myself other than in relation to what my husband and children would do without me and the sadness of not being there for the important moments in their lives. The Israelites were going into a hostile territory and no doubt were fearful for their mortal bodies because of the threat from the peoples they were displacing. God assured them their borders would be safe so there would be no need to occupy the mind with endless worry over the safety of home and family. It would be wonderful to think God has placed an inpenetrable boundary around our families which would protect us from all harm, however, this is not the promise. God’s promise to us through Jesus Christ is that we do not have to fear those who can harm the body, but only the One who can kill the soul. As Paul stated, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Our assurance of peace and safety is to be delivered safely home – even if by means of death – into the arms of Jesus. (2 Timothy 4:18) That may sound a bit gloomy, but it is a huge comfort to me!

3. Assurance of provision – The Israelites lived from crop to crop. These days we live paycheck to paycheck. God promised His people provision of necessities just as He continues to do today. Psalm 37:25 reads, “I have been young, and [now] am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” Again in Matthew 6 we are assured God is aware of our needs and as long as we are seeking the Kingdom, our necessities will be met. I believe much disappointment often comes in this area because we do not recognize what a true necessity is. Jesus did not have a place to lay his head and yet we find ourselves grumbling because our homes are not big enough or as pretty as the one next door. We overspend and when the bill comes due, become indignant with God because He didn’t provide the money to pay them. Many ‘health and wealthers’ will tell you God wants you to be prosperous. This is simply not a concept taught in Scripture. Any gospel that can not be taught in the places of deepest poverty in our world is no gospel at all. Be assured your God will meet all your needs in Christ Jesus – just don’t be dismayed if that doesn’t include a BMW and house in the ‘burbs. Let’s make knowing Him our greatest possession!

4. To Be Loved - Ahhh..love, sweet love. I would venture to say the majority of the mistakes women make are in some way related to trying to manipulate affection in our favor. What else could God have done to prove his lovingkindness towards Israel? He destroyed those who hurt them, parted seas, set mountains on fire, rained manna and quail from heaven, sent water from a rock, guided their way by the Angel of the Lord, and finally made His dwelling place among them. And yet, they wanted more. Though it seems so simplistic, how our lives would be forever secure if we could truly wrap our minds around the heighth, depth, width, and breadth of the love of Christ towards His children. One of the most freeing things God ever taught me was that I am forever safe in His heart because He loves me and is for me. There may be days when I say to God, “why am I your target?” (Job 7:20) But, this thing I know. Satan is the one who plays with darts – God alone has Swords and He is using those for my protection and Satan’s destruction. You are safe, Dear One, because He is your shield.

Blessed To Be a Blessing

Our culture teaches us we can either manufacture within ourselves or purchase all of these basic things, but God created us to need the things only He can fully provide. There is a huge difference between pride and righteous confidence. Pride fools one into thinking we can create our own Promised Land. The other recognizes, just as Abram did, God is our Portion, our shield, and our very great reward.

I believe we can define living in a spiritual Canaan as being in a place of righteous confidence in the Father. A place of our identity completely being wrapped inside of His. A place we can live with our faces turned unashamedly towards the sky. A place of faith in the means of God’s provision and being satisfied if what we receive is a huge portion of Him. In this place is where we will be able to operate in a mode of full effectiveness for the Kingdom unbound by the carnal baggage Satan continually piles on our shoulders. As we evaluate the experiences of our lives, it is time we process those with the covering of God’s Word so we can move into the Promise – the place where we can use our blessings to minister to others. As Galatians 3:8 says, this is how the Gospel is spread!

There are times when I am praying about a certain way to present what is on my heart and I will hear a song that packages my thoughts and wraps them in a gorgeous bow. To complete our lesson today, I leave you with a song by Mercy Me called, “The Place Where I Belong”. It is my deepest desire for each of you to be able to repeat these words for yourself.

That place where we’re complete
The one that occupies our dreams
That place we’re lucky to call our home

Well I have arrived
And I can’t keep this inside

So I raise my hands
And shout Your name
To praise You with my song
My dream’s at hand, I’ve found my place
The place where I belong

Everybody tries
To find the purpose for their life
In hopes that one more day is justified
But once you truly see
The very reason why you breathe
It becomes so much more than getting by

Everybody hopes
That maybe somewhere down this road
We’d finally find that place where we belong

I have arrived – And I can’t keep this inside.

BURNING QUESTIONS

1. Do you struggle with a sense of self-worth? How do you perceive this has affected the way you are able to ‘keep your head upright’? If not, do you know someone who suffers in this area?

2. What are you most afraid of? Does this fear affect the way you move through life? (Ex. Are you overprotective with children? Afraid to take risks?)

3. What is one of the most marvelous ways God has provided a need? I can’t wait to hear your stories on this one!

4. Steve Brown, a Moody Broadcasting Bible Teacher, is one of the first people I ever heard teach the concept that God was not mad at me. I grew up in a denomination that led me to believe He was in a continuous state of disappointment over my failures. How about you? Though in your heart you know God says He loves you, does Satan in your mind ever try to convince you otherwise?

5. How close are you to your own Promised Land? Not at all, 1/2 way, almost there? By this I mean the place of abundant living and effectiveness here on earth, not the ultimate fulfillment in Glory! Though I hope you are going to heaven, I don’t want it to be today! :)

I look forward to our discussion this week!

And the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name’.
‘I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me; for they are Yours. All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine. And glory has come to me through them.’ John 17:10

Welcome back, Girls! I know your days are most likely finding you very busy with sending children back to school, and/or with various work, sport and church activities. I want to take this time to applaud your effort in hanging in with this study! It is Week Twelve for Pete’s Sake! I only wish I could reach through this screen and hug your sweet necks. You are such a unique, wise, and insightful group of women and I have learned so very much from your participation in this study. I am honored you have walked this road with me. Thank you, dear friends. You’ll never know what it has meant to me to serve you these past months and hopefully for many more to come!

This week will conclude our unit of the Fame of the Lord. God’s celebrity is made manifest through our reaction to trial as well as our proclamation of Him when He has done great things for us. As the Key Verses today suggest, His abiding presence also sets us apart in His Name. So, in a spiritual kind of way, we are famous too! The only kind of recognition we should ever seek for ourselves is the kind which will point directly back to our God. Anything less sets up the same type of idolatry the Israelites were so prone to practice.

I hope you have taken the opportunity to read the Background Passages. To gain context, remember Moses has just returned from Sinai with the first copy of the Tablets of Testimony to find the Israelites worshipping a golden calf fashioned from the plunder of Egypt. God threatened annihilation of the people and offered starting over with Moses as the father of a new nation of Israel. (Exodus 32:9) Moses interceded on behalf of the rebels with an appeal based on God’s covenant obligation to preserve both His promises to the Patriarchs and His reputation among the nations. (32:14) Moses was raised in the most advanced civilization of its day who credited its success to the favor of many gods. Moses’ desire to see the God of Israel make a spectacle of this pagan kingdom was intensely personal. In Moses’ experience, the success of the Israelite nation in its deliverance would either be a credit to or slander against its God. Moses’ love for Jehovah caused him to take seriously the Third Commandment, “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses His Name.” (Exodus 20:7) This reverance for God’s name spilled over into protecting it at all costs against defamation.

Moses recognized the disobedience of Israel had placed God’s glory in jeopardy. This is not to say God is ever at any time limited in His grandeur. There is one thing God will always be and that is the One who fills the Universe with marvelous light. God’s eternal, transcending glory is never compromised. However, in a divine mystery we can scarce comprehend, human agency has been allowed to have effect on God’s fame in the mortal realm.

The Book of Job illustrates this concept beautifully. Key to understanding the afflictions of Job is realizing only one person in the three players of this drama did not know how Job would react in his suffering – Satan. God knew when he prompted Satan to consider Job’s righteousness that Job would not fail His Name. Though Job was stripped of every tangible evidence of divine blessing, he resolved to proclaim, ‘though He slay me, yet will I trust Him’ and again, ‘I know my redeemer lives.’ Satan is not omniscient so he could not know that with every new ruin brought fresh resolve, every pang of suffering birthed supernatural strength, and each rebuke of a friend forged a relationship with God so strong the gates of hell would not be able to prevail against it. God’s glory will not come unintentionally or without great determination. There is a great Mercy Me song called “Last One Standing“. This must be the sentiment in our heart if we are to survive this present age!

Moses’ intercession resulted in God’s relenting in the destruction He’d planned of the people. God’s threat to remove His presence from the nation is what drove Moses to ask God to ‘show His glory’. God had already told Moses He ‘knew Him by name and found favor in him’ yet Moses could not claim this same level of intimacy. Moses had seen God in the wonders, but more important to him was knowing God in the inmost, private places. Wonders would not be such if they weren’t few and far between. Many believers set themselves up for disappointment by becoming what James MacDonald calls ‘Wonders Junkies’. They are so transfixed on the huge displays of God they can’t cope during the days of small things. Something tells me Moses was ready for a few uneventful days.

Moses had seen the Wonders – now He desired God’s glory. This is defined in the Expositor’s Bible Commentary as ‘his goodness, his entire character and nature’. To say Moses’ request pleased God is an understatement. More than anything, God wants us to seek relationship over provision, intimacy over the miraculous, the intangible over the material. Would you like to know the amazing thing which happens when we do this? The former request is often coupled with the latter based on the concept of Matthew 6:33 which says ‘But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.’ God caused all His goodness to pass in front of Moses and covered him with His own hand and yet the sight of it was not as precious to Moses as the love of the Father who would arrange this display.

What exactly was Moses asking for when he wanted to see God’s Glory? For lack of a better parallel, Moses was asking God for what we bloggers call a MIRL (Meet In Real Life). Think about that with me for a moment. How many women do you check in on regularly? How many of you have taken your friendships to the next level by way of phone calls, gift exchanges, and the ultimate sign of trust – telling one another your kids’ real names? There comes a time there is nowhere else to go except to meet in person so what you know in part can be known fully. The same type of request was made by Philip in John 14 (see key verse above). Praise God what was once a mystery has been made known in the God man Jesus Christ. We now have a face to the Name.

Girls, I do hope you grasp your role in making Your God known. I hope you treasure the Name He has set upon you. It is the combination of both of these phenomena whereby people will be gripped with the fear of the Lord and make their decisions about eternity. Jesus prayed for you in John 17. He recognized glory would come to him through you. Let’s be the desired answer to that prayer.

Go make God famous!

Burning Questions

1. We discussed how we are God’s fame and He is ours. Have you ever been in a situation where you are applauded for your ministry and had to fight back the idol of pride? Ever been tempted to believe your own press? It’s okay to admit it! Your testimony will help others in their resolve!

2. Did it ever occur to you in the 3-way drama of God, Job, and Satan that Satan was the only one outside the loop as far as Job’s reactions would be? Does this encourage you in resolving to make a fool of him when he attempts to use you to defame the Name?

3. Are you in a situation now where you feel you are being overcome? Better yet, are you in a situation where you should have been overcome but are not?

4. Have you failed in a Satan-designed trial? Can you recognize God intends for this failure to refine and resolve you for next time? God is not out for your destruction but your perfection!

5. Can you describe yourself as a Wonders Junkie? Found yourself in spiritual highs and lows depending on whether you perceived God was doing wondrous things or not?

6. Have you ever been like Philip and had God right in your face and not recognized Him?

7. Journal a brief prayer asking God for His Glory. Let it be the thing we all desire above all else…..

Background Reading:
Joshua Chapter 2

Key Verses:

“This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the people everywhere under the heavens, who, when they hear the report of you, will tremble and be in anguish because of you.” Deut. 2:25

“When we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.” Joshua 2:11

As we continue in our study of the fame of the Lord, this week’s focus will again fast-forward us some time into the journey of the Israelites as they begin their conquest of the Promised Land.

I have always loved Joshua Chapter Two. It is so James Bond, isn’t it? We have two men sent by Joshua to spy out Jericho in order to form a plan of attack. They are almost discovered and find refuge with Rahab the harlot who hides the men and gives them just the information they need. The excitement and intrigue have all the makings of the perfect action flick. They don’t call it Holy SCRIPTure for nothing! We’ll just pray Tom Cruise never gets cast in this one…(Can I say that in a Bible Study? :)

Our focus today will be taken from Rahab’s report given to the spies in Joshua 2:9-11:

“I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you and what He did to the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. When we heard it, our hearts melted, and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.”

The fame of the Lord will always strike fear into the hearts of men (and women). Some people will not admit they are afraid of a coming judgment, but I do not believe there is a person anywhere who has never given eternity a second thought or secretly wondered, ‘what if it’s all true?’. The fear of the Lord is our common ground, but the response to that fear can be broken down into two types of people, those who respond with a fist or with faith:

1. With Fist…

The inhabitants of Jericho were terrified of the news they had heard – primarily the utter destruction of Sihon and Og. Often, when people are threatened with impending judgement, instead of submitting to the one who has power to execute justice they instead go into defense mode. They lash out instead of reach out. They run instead of succumb. They spew hate rather than accept love. In essence, this encounter becomes a war. Those who choose not to believe decide they must hate the thing which they perceive is threatening them – in this case a loving, yet righteous God. This is why they shake their fists at the sky. Don’t we all know people like this? We tell them about a loving God and we are met with rejection and even anger when we suggest eternal damnation is the consequence for unbelief.

Another perfect example of Fist Shakers were the Pharisees. Their fear was loss of control. They were not willing accept the divine paradox which says you must lose your life to find it . You must serve in order to lead. You must become lesser in order to be greater. (Luke 17:33, John 13:16, John 3:30) When Jesus confronted them with this, instead of accepting Him, they killed Him. Again, this is still the truth today as people who reject the Gospel are ultimately quashing the voice of the Holy Spirit and as a consequence, hardening their heart for the next go round. Remember the Pharaoh of the Exodus? I believe this concept can be applied to His continued refusal to allow the Israelites to leave Egypt even though his country was falling down around his ears. This battle was one of self-preservation and control. The power to preserve and control belongs to One alone. Fortunately, it was not the Pharaoh and is not you and me! The heartbreaking truth is often it takes rock bottom to make one finally look up and drop their hands in surrender, if they ever surrender at all. Oh, Girls! We have a huge task on this planet to hold the hands of our lost sisters so they’ll stop shaking those things at the sky!

2. With Faith….

Those who respond in faith will experience a holy fear that will transcend their bodies and cut straight to their souls. Faith is a gift which is freely offered to everyone (Romans 10:17, Eph 2:8) however, the open hand of the ‘Faith Taker’ manifests itself in action instead of anger. As Rahab told the spies of the fear she shared with her countrymen, she went on to make a critical confession that was lacking in the response of the king and citizens of Jericho , “..for the Lord your God, He is God of Heaven above and Earth beneath.” For a worshipper of the Canaanite deities and a peddler of debauchery, this statement was huge. Rahab recognized in the mighty wonders God had performed on behalf of the Israelites that He indeed controlled everything above her head and beneath her feet and salvation would be found in no other name (Acts 4:12). Rahab somehow comprehended she should not ‘fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.’ (Matt. 10:28) She submitted herself to the God of Israel and bound herself to this nation from this point forward. Her faith demonstrated in action on behalf of the spies resulted in the salvation of her household and inclusion in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

In his most excellent book, Twelve Extraordinary Women, John MacArthur makes a point about Rahab’s ability to quickly hide the spies. He says,

“The speed and ingenuity of her scheme to hide them suggests that she was experienced in this kind of thing. Apparently the stalks of flax, ‘which she had laid in order on the roof’, were there for precisely that purpose, in case a jealous wife came looking for a client. Rahab had a long rope handy too. No doubt she had arranged similar escapes, but for different reasons, in the past. The hiding place certainly served a high and holy purpose this time.”

When I read this, I immediately thought back to Lesson “Instrument of Wonders“, and our discussion over how our past sin and failures could be redeemed for the glory of God. It may interest you to know some scholars theorize one of the the spies was actually Salmon, the man Rahab later married. This may or may not be true but if it is, talk about transforming a common object as a tool for wonders! The flax which once hid Rahab’s secret lovers now covered a man who would look past all her sin and love her unconditionally, just as Jesus Christ continues to do for us today. The rope which once provided a means for escape for the lowlifes who frequented her establishment now gave God-speed to the righteous men who would secure her salvation. This same scarlet rope which once symbolized Rahab’s shame now represented atonement and would be the marker that saved her life as well as the lives of her family. I get chills just thinking about it! Even if Salmon was not one of the spies, Rahab received something from these Israelite men she had not experienced from a man in a very long time. Dignity. Honor. Respect. I can imagine Rahab walking through her home for the last time and seeing the flax and rope. The spies redeemed the images she would have related to those objects. Nevertheless, I believe she left them behind and never looked back.

Rahab’s one request of these men was to ‘deal kindly’ with her father’s household by sparing their lives from death. (Joshua 2:12-13) The Hebrew word for ‘kindly’ can be translated as ‘unfailing love’. The same love God demonstrates towards His children is what Rahab both gave and received. Because she allowed her fear to become faith, Rahab “lived in the midst of Israel” for the rest of her life.

Amazing isn’t it? Rahab lived in the Promise but was not under the Promise. Spiritually speaking, Canaan was returned to her in an entirely new way. This is what I call a full circle experience – where everything and nothing are the same. The same thing can be seen with Moses after he led the Israelites to the base of Mt. Horeb where the Lord first said to him, “Certainly, I will be with you, and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you; when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain.” (Exodus 3:12) Moses left as one man and returned a nation, all according to the Lord’s promise.

In all these things, what stirred action was fear met with faith instead of fist. Let’s talk about it a bit in our ‘Burning Questions’.

BURNING QUESTIONS

1. When is the last time you encountered a Fist Shaker? This may be a stranger to you or as close as a loved one in your own home. Does anything in our description help you to understand their animosity towards God? Are you able to have more compassion towards them?

2. Does anything about Rahab’s redemption strike a nerve? This may be a question you would like to ponder privately. Sexual sin and/or victimization can be an area where Satan has an enormous stronghold because it can hold so many painful and shameful memories. If Rahab teaches us anything, please know God can redeem any life and any situation, no matter how heinous it seems, and plant you unashamedly ‘in the midst of Israel’. Rahab deserved death according to Mosaic Law, however she was shown nothing but lovingkindness by the God and nation of Israel.

3. Is there an area of your life in which you feel you have come full circle? Where you’ve come to a place where everything and nothing are the same? (I’m thinking Lord of the Rings when Frodo goes back to the Shire after his long adventure. You have no clue what I just said if you are not an LOTR nerd so just ignore this if it doesn’t make sense! :)

4. When you were born again, did you gain a new appreciation for your surroundings as Rahab did when she received the Promise along with the Promised Land? Has some old place, object, or relationship been redeemed by now serving a ‘high and holy purpose’?

5. Believers can still be Fist Shakers. Do you have circumstances in your life in which you find yourself shaking your fist at God? Something He has asked you to endure, asked you to do, seemingly taken away from you? Can you see how shaking your fist is keeping you from your Promise? (I’m not talking eternal security here – Only abundant living.)

Until next week…
