Thankful Thursday
What I am thankful for today is life – all 36 years of it. There was a time I would have told you I wasn’t so grateful for the first 22 years because I was not born again. I still literally cringe over the cold-hearted person I was back then. Up until the past year, I would have described my life prior to 1993 as wasted. However, I now can understand you can not be grateful for light unless you have been in pitch black. I think of the Egyptian plague of darkness – so dark it could be felt – and how overjoyed they must have been when daybreak finally came. This blotting of the sun was God’s way of showing them their most powerful deity – Ra the sun god – was impotent before Jehovah God. I feel the same way today. Those 22 years of blackness are something I can still feel from time to time, but my El Elyon reminds me the power of those years hold nothing over me now. From here on out, the occasional thunderstorm will come, but there will always be a Holy Spirit breeze blowing to reveal a beautiful, endless, blue sky.
I have arrived in a place where I am comfortable in my own skin. The hair may be getting gray. I may never lose those last 15 baby lbs. I can’t shop in the Juniors department nor buy anything but age-defying makeup. But that is SO okay with me. I embrace the good life God has chosen for me and look forward to what He has in store.
So today I am thankful for my husband who loves me unconditionally. For my kids who love me with all their muscle. For a family who loves me despite my quirks and hangups. For friends who dwell on my good instead of my insufficiencies. For you girls who are an endless source of inspiration and encouragement. And to my God, who redeemed a life that wasn’t worth living.
It’s not much, but its Yours.
My dear friend Laurel is hosting Thankful Thursday today…Go run see her and get in on the Gratitude! :)
Happy Belated Birthday sweet one, may you always be blessed.
Amen Lisa, I think that is what the 30’s is about…becoming comfortable in your own skin. You are not tied up with the worries of the 20’s and the insecurities of the teenage years. And yes, God is maturing and working in us so we can be Titus 2 women =)
Happy birthday once again my friend.
Lisa, Happy Birthday! And, thank you for your testimony regarding “life.” May the next 22 years of your life be “full of Him”! You are chosen and appointed for such a time as this!
It is true about being grateful for the light when you have been in the pitch blackness. I am one who stood in the dark for years and managed to fight my way out of the pit. Thank you for sharing about being comfortable in your own skin.
I love birthdays, so I am thrilled you had a great one. My 30th is next month! I can’t wait!!!
Hey, We’re the same age!
Great TT. Happy (late) Birthday!
Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained by a righteous life.
Proverbs 16:31. I used to color my hair every 2 weeks or so, I would pull out every gray hair I could find, then I realized. . .”Hey I’ve earned these.” So out with the hair color, plus if I had kept pulling them I would be bald, LOL. Happy birthday. I’m 38 going on 39 and the view from here is exceptional. Thank you for your precious post.
How great is our God, and how amazing is His grace!
This was just precious Lisa.
And those 22 years were not a waste at all in His Kingdom. Clearly, they have molded every bit of who you are today. He is a God of Redemption, and it is obvious that He has put it all into use for His glory. How worthy of praise is He!?
I love your outlook on life! Sounds like you had a wonderful birthday!
I’ll be 36 in Oct…..so, I know how you feel. I needed to hear the words of encouragement about excepting yourself just as you are…quirks and all! Thanks for that!
FYI..you may already know… or not interested…or tell my to mind my own business…but..if you are still looking for a job I saw one posted for a full-time General Aide at Ider School. Don’t know if you are interested…just a thought! Call the Board of Education for more info. @638-6921.
Beautiful post, Lisa. And a blessing as always. 36, I was just trying to remember where I was at 36. Girl you are still young.
I’ve not been doing the Bible study the last two weeks. While traveling, I just consentrated on my quiet time.
LOVE this post and I totally relate. I’ll turn 37 in a couple of weeks and I love this age. I really do feel comfortable in my own skin.
HAPPY Birthday, girlfriend!
Happy belated birthday, sweet friend. I’m thankful for your spirit of encouragement.
This is a great post and it’s a testament to the verse “the old is gone, the new has come”….I wish I was still in my 30’s…..all you spring chickens make me feel old!

I still have no idea how to make it cute but I have figured out how to post!!

What a wonderful list. I do not think I have ever read a more sincere list. And, if it is true that you become ‘comfortable’ in you skin in you thirtys, then I am sayin’ bring ’em on! Thank you for your encouragement.
Hey. I wanted to say this is just beautiful and also I wanted to share a quote that I thought might pertain to your thinking about those first 22 years of life….
“…the expiriences of our lives, when we let God use them, become the mysterious and perfect preperation for the work He will give us to do.”
That is from Corrie Ten Boom in the book The Hiding Place. Read it?
love-
Mindy
ps – I think it is so sweet that you remember my dog. =)
Happy belated Birthday Girl!
Sounds like my kind of day. So glad you enjoyed it.

Happy birthday Lisa

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
You’re in good company, sister, as far as the gray hair, etc. go. But that’s ok. My wrinkles are badges of honor, earned through hard life lessons! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
Hey Lisa,
Happy belated birthday :) It sounds like you had a great one!
About the “22 years,” I learned something in a recent Bible study that’s really stuck with me — the light always follows the dark. I guess I always thought the light came first, but in Genesis 1 when God was creating the world, He said – let there be light and then there was light (meaning it was dark already and He gave the light).
I wish I could remember what study I was doing :D It is terrible to get old — my memory started going at 30 and I’m only 34 now :D Thanks for sharing your list!
Great post!
I am still trying to get “comfortable” in my own skin; when you do reach that …that is freedom! And I will be 46 in Sep! As for the gray hair I just color the grays.
I admire your discipline in studying the bible. Not just read but study the history.
Happy belated birthday Lisa. It sounds like the Lord has given beautiful people for your life, and that is such a blessing. Thank you for your transparency and willingness to share about yoru earlier years. We can all be so thankful for what God has done, and what He has brought us out of. This is truly a beautiful post!
